On June 12, LE SSERAFIM, ILLIT, and KATSEYE released ICONIC BY MISTAKE,” an electronic dance-pop collaboration that brought together three of HYBE’s popular girl groups. While they share the same corporate ecosystem, each group has spent the last few years carving out a distinct artistic identity, making the collaboration one of the most exciting releases of the summer. The music video premiered on June 10, while the song arrived on streaming platforms two days later and has since garnered more than 50 million views on YouTube as of June 28.

The collaboration has also translated into impressive commercial success. On June 24, “ICONIC BY MISTAKE” debuted at No. 38 on the Billboard Hot 100. The track also entered at No. 25 on the Billboard Global 200 and No. 22 on the Global Excl. U.S. chart. In the United Kingdom, the song reached No. 22 on the Official Singles Chart Top 100, further highlighting its global appeal.

The achievement marks LE SSERAFIM's fourth entry on the Billboard Hot 100, ILLIT's second, and KATSEYE's fifth. Beyond streaming numbers, fan engagement has remained strong across platforms, with the song's dance practice video surpassing ten million views within days of release. The collaboration also secured first place on Mnet's M Countdown, adding another milestone to an already successful run.

What makes the collaboration particularly interesting is that it brings together three groups with very different identities. LE SSERAFIM has become known for fearless and autobiographical storytelling, ILLIT has built their identity around youthful charm and refreshing concepts, and KATSEYE has emerged as one of the most recognizable global girl groups of the social media era. Rather than blending those identities into something generic, “ICONIC BY MISTAKE” allows each group to retain its individuality while contributing to a shared narrative.

Announced on June 7 as a surprise collaboration, the release was described as a celebration of individuality, confidence, and creative expression. Rather than positioning one group at the center, the song distributes its spotlight evenly, allowing all three acts to contribute to a message that feels collective rather than competitive.

That sense of collaboration is reflected behind the scenes as well. Production was primarily led by KATSEYE's A&R and music team, choreography was handled through ILLIT's performance team, and the visual direction drew heavily from LE SSERAFIM's creative identity. The result feels less like three groups sharing a song and more like three artistic worlds building something together.

Lyrically, “ICONIC BY MISTAKE” explores the criticism and scrutiny LE SSERAFIM, ILLIT, and KATSEYE have faced since their respective debuts. Instead of dwelling on negativity, the song reframes criticism as something that has only amplified their visibility and strengthened their resolve.

The chorus delivers that message directly:

“Hating me is like all you do, breakfast to dinner / Algorithm bulletproof, b-breaking your fingers / Thank you for the comments, it's because of all your hate / I-I-I-I-I-I-I am iconic by mistake.”

Rather than allowing criticism to define them, the groups turn it into a source of confidence. The song acknowledges the realities of living under constant public observation while refusing to let negativity shape their sense of self.

“ICONIC BY MISTAKE” also feels like a response to the culture of online criticism itself. The internet has transformed how artists and fans interact, creating opportunities for instant connection while also exposing artists to relentless scrutiny. The song recognizes both realities, ultimately challenging the negativity by asking a surprisingly simple question: “Honestly, are you okay?”

One of the song's most memorable moments comes through LE SSERAFIM leader KIM CHAEWON's line, “I, I survived the fame and I barely changed.”

The lyric captures the complicated reality of modern stardom. Fame can bring recognition and opportunity, but it can also invite pressure and constant judgment. By emphasizing that she remains herself despite everything that accompanies public visibility, KIM CHAEWON delivers one of the clearest statements of the song's message.

KATSEYE member DANIELA contributes another standout moment with the lyric, “I'm just tryna stay me, dance a little crazy, but now I am iconic from how much you fuckin' hate me.”

The line is particularly memorable coming from DANIELA, whose stage presence and performance energy have often sparked discussion among fans online. Rather than responding defensively, the lyric dismisses unnecessary criticism, suggesting that authenticity matters far more than universal approval.

Perhaps what makes the song work so well is that the message never feels forced. LE SSERAFIM, ILLIT, and KATSEYE have each experienced intense levels of scrutiny despite achieving remarkable success in a relatively short period of time. “ICONIC BY MISTAKE” acknowledges those experiences without allowing them to become the defining narrative.

Directed by Cody Critcheloe, the music video embraces a grungy, gothic-inspired visual style, taking viewers through a cemetery, a dentist's clinic, and vast fields beneath dark, cloudy skies that add to its haunting atmosphere. The darker settings are balanced by bright costumes, surreal visuals, and playful details that keep the video from ever feeling too heavy. More than anything, it is the members' undeniable charm and confidence that make every scene so engaging. The music video has a high rewatch value, with fun visual elements and subtle details that continue to stand out with every watch.

Fans quickly noticed references to each group's previous work. LE SSERAFIM's scenes draw inspiration from EASY,” ILLIT's sections echo elements of Cherish (My Love),” and KATSEYE's moments recall imagery from Touch.” These references help the collaboration feel like a celebration of each group's journey rather than a departure from their established identities.

The project was not without its challenges. KATSEYE member MANON and ILLIT member MOKA were on hiatus during filming and therefore do not appear in the music video. However, MOKA's vocals remain on the track, having been recorded before her hiatus began.

Beyond the visuals, the choreography deserves recognition for how effectively it balances the strengths of all three groups. The performance never feels crowded despite bringing together so many members on one stage. No single act dominates the spotlight. Instead, each group maintains its own identity while contributing to a larger collective vision.

The same balance can be seen in the dance practice video, where the chemistry between all three groups becomes even more evident. One of the most enjoyable parts of the performance is seeing the members interact with one another. When LE SSERAFIM, ILLIT, and KATSEYE finally come together during the final choreography sequence, the synchronization and camaraderie become some of the most memorable aspects of the release.

The collaboration has also brought together FEARNOTs, GLLITs, and EYEKONS, creating a rare moment of unity between three fandoms that have spent years supporting their favorite groups individually. In that sense, “ICONIC BY MISTAKE” succeeds not only as a song but also as a celebration of community.

“ICONIC BY MISTAKE” has arrived at the perfect time. The word “iconic” is often thrown around online within minutes of a song's release, usually attached to a viral moment, a catchy dance challenge, or a trending clip. Yet the song itself seems to challenge the idea that success happens overnight. Behind every chart achievement, sold-out tour, and viral moment are years of training, criticism, and perseverance. LE SSERAFIM, ILLIT, and KATSEYE may come from the same HYBE ecosystem, but each group has built its own identity through hard work, resilience, and a willingness to keep moving forward despite the scrutiny that often follows them.

So, are LE SSERAFIM, ILLIT, and KATSEYE “ICONIC BY MISTAKE?” The title may suggest so, but the song tells a different story. From its lyrics and choreography to the chemistry shared between all three groups, the collaboration feels like a celebration of everything these artists have achieved.
