On Sunday, April 13, Charley Yang, professionally known as BoyWithUke packed the house at Denver’s Mission Ballroom as he treated his fans to a night of music and fun on his Burnout World Tour. Fans of all ages lined up hours before doors on the chilly and windy Colorado spring evening excited to see the musician take to the stage.
Kickstarting the night was opener, Ethan Bortnick, a talented pianist who blends classical keys with alternate and experimental pop sounds. Bortnick performed tracks of his such as “Engravings,” “Prom,” unreleased “Florida Keys,” and his newest single, “Violet.” The crowd was captivated as Ethan effortlessly switched from ragging on the piano to riffing on the guitar to belting out emotional vocals showcasing his musical versatility. As his set came to an end, the crowd was buzzing with excitement, amped up for BoyWithUke to take the stage.

After a short intermission and a set change, the venue went dark and the crowd, eager to see BoyWithUke, erupted. Charley emerged from the shadows, the crowd screaming as he launched into his first song, “Burn.” Seamlessly blending lo-fi indie pop with his infectious energy, Charley mesmerized his audience as he went on to perform songs like “Stranger,” “Corduroy,” and fan favorite, “Two Moons,” which had the crowd jumping and screaming along to the lyrics. BoyWithUke danced around the stage heightening the energy that filled the venue, making fans swoon with euphoria.

Charley also took moments to connect with his fans. His Instagram popular “Fishing with Fans” moment fostered chaos as fans competed to grab the fish for a chance to be welcomed onto the stage. One lucky Denver fan who caught said fish made his way onto the stage where Charley strapped boxing gloves on him and promptly told him, “Good luck.” A tour member adorned with the iconic BoyWithUke mask entered the stage also sporting gloves and the match was on. The two casually sparred around the stage as “Eye of the Tiger” played in the background and the crowd cheered for the fan.

Once the boxing match was over, Charley had the fan press a button on his sound board that rang out a sound effect. As the fan left the stage, the masked crew member returned carrying a ukelele, holding it out to Charley. The crowd cheered, egging him on to take the instrument. Charley took it and held it out to the crowd which welcomed generous applause. BoyWithUke took up the ukulele and strummed into his next song, “Migraine.”

Denver’s Mission Ballroom provided the perfect backdrop for BoyWithUke’s Burnout Tour with its intimate setting and state-of-the-art acoustics. Fans were truly treated to a fully immersive experience. As the night came to an end, BoyWithUke thanked his fans for their love and support as he exited the stage leaving behind the audience buzzing with emotion.
