Liana Flores’ Vocals Are Here to Save the Day
From the opening moments of “So it goes,” the first track on Liana Flores’ newest six-song EP And so it goes…, it is clear this project is an easy-listening dream. Crystal-clear, floaty vocals, accompanied by dreamy piano, bass, and percussion make Flores’ EP an instant classic.
Growing up in England, Flores’ love of bossa nova music inspired her to make music of her own and connect with her Brazilian background, despite not growing up speaking Portuguese. Towards the end of “So it goes,” Flores slips easily into Portuguese, adding another dimension to the lyrics with the question, “Que mais tem pra fazer?” or “What else is there to do?”
The previously released single “Silvershoes” delivers a strong, upbeat tempo, with Flores’ signature whimsy and airiness heard throughout, creating vivid imagery with “All your life, your smile is like a sunflower / All my life, I hide behind a cloud.” The repetitive “I’m going your way,” which trails off at the end of the track with the bass thrumming behind her, sets an eerie, moody tone.
Each of the tracks on Flores’ project are crafted with care, painting a picture with themed imagery. “Gemini” is no different, reflecting on recent changes in her life with the line, “Trying to cook but everything that I put in comes out the shape of the moon.” Her 2021 TikTok virality with “rises the moon” became a complicated moment for the singer-songwriter, who was considering abandoning her musical pursuits to study zoology at university. She later signed with Verve Records in the U.S. and Fiction Records in the U.K., giving her the opportunity to travel to the United States for the first time and record in a studio.
The final track on the EP, “The way I say goodbye,” carries a different vibe from the rest, a nostalgic sound akin to Carly Simon, giving hope and promise to the tender topic of a breakup or loss. Flores’ “goodbye” in this moment could be to her life as she knew it, to the young Norfolk-raised girl who grew up trying to make sense of the world through music after a move to London. Despite the sadness of the goodbye and the mourning of what once was, hope persists: “And I am not alone, though it’s the end / The summer birds are flying freely and I’m feeling like a dove, watch the city from above.”
Fans of similar artists might recognize Flores from her work as a supporting act on tours like Laufey’s 2022 Everything I Know About Love tour and in Ichiko Aoba’s 2026 Across the Oceans tour stop at Albert Hall. Flores now hits the road this month on her headlining tour across Europe, the U.S., and Mexico. Tickets are on sale now via various ticketing partner sites.
