Experience Melina KB's Musical Theater Crash Out with ‘The Show Must Go Wrong!’
Ever wanted to enter a Gen Z's dramatic crash out dreamscape? Melina KB has perfectly captured this exact feeling with her new EP, The Show Must Go Wrong! This Korean-Greek-American artist previously went viral for her feminist anthem “I’ve Had Enough” in 2021. She is now taking advantage of the new wave of showtune-inspired pop with her newest EP, which has garnered more than 1.8 million streams since its Aug. 28 release.

The EP starts with a paranoid monologue in “Will I Survive the Night?” depicting Melina’s inner thoughts during a night in. We don’t know about you, but we’ve definitely felt this scary, looking-over-your-shoulder feeling, especially after watching a horror movie. The fast-paced violins and gliding, warbling keyboards only add to the panic-inducing feel of this opening song. The lyrics dive in even deeper, exploring the thought that what if the monsters creeping in the night aren’t just physical but maybe are the real life horrors of anxiety. “Don’t check the news feed / Don’t take it loosely to hide / From all of the vampires and werewolves and ransoming robbers / That live in my mind.” It’s clear this Tennessee local is going to take us on a vivid journey from beginning to end with this release.
Piling on top of the chronic over-thinker allegations, Melina leads us straight into “Gotcha!,” an insecure girlfriend’s absolute nightmare. Creating a story of what her boyfriend could be doing behind her back sends her into a fantasy spiral. The song opens with a sweet melody, giving us an almost idyllic and perfect image. But the inner thoughts start to creep in as we enter the chorus with rapid-fire lyrics and a rampant tempo. The ebbs and flows of these two moods, the contrast between thinking everything is fine and jealous paranoia, are fighting for control of this song. Will we ever find out what this lover is up to? The grass is always greener on the other side, but why can’t we choose the best of both worlds? “PANIC” is a bisexual anthem wrapped in melodramatic gift wrap. With a Y2K synth vibe and syncopated pre-chorus, we can feel Melina’s inner struggle, almost mimicking her conflicted heartbeat. While her feelings are completely valid, she still is able to make light of this issue with clever wordplay in this bop with, “Why can't I have them both? / Damnit / Breakdown incoming, panic.”
In the next track, it’s clear that Melina has made a romantic choice, “Promised my house I’m swearing off men.” Luckily for her, she gets to explore her next options in “Helen’s Door.” As the title suggests, we are deep in Greek and Roman mythological analogies with this tune. “We’re in a Trojan war / I don’t need a cowboy / To save a horsе,” a play on the classic Big & Rich lyric from their country single “Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy),” but reclaiming it to emphasize her previous vow to avoid men. This song adds a pop punk twist to classic musical theater storytelling with a solid electric guitar baseline and drum line. Will this myth end in tragedy or a happily ever after?
With a jaunty sea shanty, Melina explains what happens when you’re ghosted by a potential lover. “Abandoned Ship” is the pirate’s equivalent of waiting for a DTR (define the relationship) in the best way possible. When left on read, it can only cause one’s imagination to run wild. “So I wait / I craft up ways / Why you’ve gone M.I.A.” With her fantastical depictions of where her lover could be, we can only start to believe there is no other reason for their disappearance. But it’s going to be okay, we’re rooting for you Melina. They have to respond at some point, since after all, “Don’t you know you can’t abandon ship?”
And of course, last but definitely not least, Melina wraps up this new era with “Ghost Light,” a heartfelt and raw look into her inner child. This track is a sudden melodic change compared to the rest of this release, but it’s a perfect ending to this chaotic journey. We are able to slow down with this stripped-down, piano-heavy ballad. At the end of the day, we’ve all had grand childhood dreams. This sixth song reminds us, “I missed my cue and the / Crowd was cruel but there’ll / Be a new show tomorrow night.” This final track instills into the listener the childlike wonder of performing and learning to believe in yourself.
