Coming out of her Rabbithole tour, Emei is jumping straight into a new era: Theater Kid core! The independent artist is embracing her theater roots with the new single “Night at the Opera,” the title track from her new EP dropping later this year on June 12th. This is a bold step in a new direction as her previous work focused on a more synth-forward, alternative feel. Emei is well known for her hyper-pop sound combined with dynamic storytelling from her own life experiences, and this single does not disappoint.

Embrace your theater kid core with her new music video:

If this music video could be described in one word, it would be whimsy. Emei takes on the classic tale of the Phantom of the Opera with this dreamscape video depicting her chaotic life. The rising of the strings adds to the frantic feel of the song, paired with the striking visuals of an opera. Additionally, the sepia-tone filter throughout the video provides a nostalgic feel and a vintage look.

Emei is stumbling through a majestic theater while a phantom-like figure chases after her. This phantom figure could be depicting the relentlessness of life, almost hunting Emei down. During these scenes, Emei pleads with the audience to save her from her predicament: “Hit the lights (Ah) / cut the chandelier / Get me out, yeah (Ah) / get me outta here.” Emei has often used her music and lyrics to portray her inner feelings to her audience, which is also depicted in other songs like “Cynical” and "Irresponsible." Previously, these songs have illustrated how she saw her unlucky streak in life as a curse, but the new single feels like she is finally taking her life back and accepting the disorder. In fact, she is even inviting the audience to join in with the show: “If I'm gonna dance, then you're gonna dance too / What's the matter, babe? / Did you bring the wrong shoes? / Fire in the risers, so your body better move.

“Night at the Opera” seems to be a wake-up call to start embracing the chaos of life instead of fighting it. At the end of the day, the show must go on, and you might as well make the most of it. Emei says, “I'm 'bout to eat this shit up / And you're gonna eat this shit up.” It’s time to start living life to the fullest, mistakes and all, and embrace the unpredictability of life.

And this just in! Emei’s bad luck is coming to an end as she has just signed a record deal with Atlantic Records! Here’s the announcement on her Instagram:
