Toronto’s Pink Light Stage was filled with life on Friday, April 30, as local artist Ashavari invited a packed room into her world for an exclusive first listen to her debut album, Goddess from the Machine. The atmosphere buzzed with anticipation as friends, supporters, and fellow creatives gathered to experience the project ahead of its official release on May 8.

The venue was bathed in a deep red glow, the hypnotic light setting the tone for the night. Two low couches sat at both corners of the room, draped with red lace. At the forefront, there was an art installation featuring crimson strings stretched and looped between two tall metal frames, weaving an intricate web that felt both delicate and deliberate. Ashavari’s pre-show playlist featured artists like DPR Ian, FKA Twigs, RIMON, and more, helping set the tone for alternative R&B and experimental sounds for the night.
It was the kind of environment that felt intentionally small and close-knit, where every face was familiar or quickly became so. Ashavari moved easily through the room, greeting guests individually and pausing for quick conversations, sharing laughter that made the night feel personal rather than a simple performance. There was a steady current of admiration directed her way, with compliments, hugs, and congratulations flowing throughout the evening. Ashavari made a point of reflecting that appreciation outward, taking the time to recognize and thank many collaborators and friends who helped bring her music to fruition.

GFTM’s lead single, “Angels Weep at Night,” was released at midnight on Friday, offering a raw and emotionally charged introduction to Ashavari’s debut album. Rooted in Ashavari’s experiences with manipulation and abuse, the track confronts the realities of toxic relationships head-on. The song opens with Ashavari recreating a distressed phone call saying, “I need help,” before diving into an infectious R&B melody with 808 beats. “Angels Weep at Night” serves as a continuation of the themes first introduced in her 2022 single, “No Angel,” where Ashavari calls out someone who revealed their true nature, rejecting the image of them as an “angel.” “Angels Weep at Night” carries a softer vocal delivery from Ashavari, capturing the emotional aftermath of those experiences and signaling a progression in Ashavari’s healing journey.
The album also features previously released singles such as “Silk & Sequins” and “Frozen Lakes and Earthquakes,” both of which lean into Ashavari’s signature smooth vocals through emotionally driven lyrics. Furthermore, “I Wish I Was A.I..” incorporates electronic elements, showcasing an experimental side of her sound. Together, the tracks reflect the sentiment echoed in Ashavari’s Spotify bio, “It’s heavy…but it’s real…” blending vulnerability, emotional depth, and genre experimentation throughout the album.

As the first run of the album came to a close, Ashavari encouraged everyone to stay and connect as the space was filled with creatives.
By 10PM, the room settled down again as Ashavari began a second listening, this time offering a deeper context behind Goddess from the Machine. She spoke of the trauma she faced which shaped the album, how it lingered, and how she ultimately transformed those emotions into sound. Ashavari guided listeners through the structure of the album, explaining how each song was carefully placed to reflect her journey, allowing the album to unfold like the climax of a film.

At the end of the night, Ashavari not only shared her new music but gave the room a framework for truly understanding both the project and herself, closing the listening party with a sense of connection and healing. Ashavari’s debut album, Goddess from the Machine, showcases a deeply personal journey through trauma, self-reflection, and growth. The night felt less like a listening party and more like an invitation into Ashavari’s healing process.
