Interview: Réjizz’s Honest Revelations for ‘The Era’ and International Thai-Funk

Steadily-rising Thai artist Réjizz has been taking over soundwaves across the country with his unique “Thai-funk,” hip hop, and R&B fusion sound. “I’m always aiming to evolve and create things outside the box,” he comments. He’s celebrating the release of his latest EP The Era, and the continuous evolution of the discography propelling him out of the Thai underground music scene and into Asia’s mainstream.

The Era is chock-full of revelations about Réjizz’s rocky journey through the music industry, highlighting the uncanny disparity between the projected image and true identity of industry players. “Uncomfortable Situations” emphasizes the feeling of navigating events while feeling like an outsider, alienated from those who only view him as a means to an end. The song was “the easiest one to write because it was bottled up in me for a while,” says Réjizz.

Réjizz doesn’t shy away from making honest observations about his own life and identity, including his musical career and impressions of the music industry. “I’ve Been Around” is a song that blends these themes seamlessly. Out of the entire creative process for The Era, the Thai artist enjoyed writing the most, explaining, “I usually finish my songs in a day, but I took more time to carefully write this project.” He specifically described walking through the park and searching for daily inspiration for his lyrics.

Réjizz’s cinematic world-building and genuine lyricism shine in his rap-forward tracks, such as “Long Disco Relationship,” where he uses the dance floor as a metaphor for the distance between two people. Rhythm and dance communicate visually that a relationship is a push-and-pull, emphasizing the importance of staying in sync together.

“Uncomfortable Situations” and “Long Disco Relationship” were released ahead of the EP along with their respective music videos. The final track that received a visualizer was “JRIZ,” the only fully Thai track on The Era. The song’s two verses interact and respond from their respective male and female viewpoints, with JRIZ being the opposite persona of Réjizz.

All three videos were self-produced, although Réjizz gives a lot of credit to the talented directors who brought his vision to life exactly as he had imagined. His favorite is “Uncomfortable Situations” as it embodied the most challenging concept. “The song was so cinematic that it was tough to execute, but the director created it perfectly,” says Réjizz.

On his upcoming tour throughout Thailand and Taiwan, Réjizz hopes to connect with more listeners through his heartfelt yet addictive grooves. “I want the world to hear that there’s music like mine coming out of Thailand. I want them to connect to [my] upbringing, my culture, my values through music,” he explains. Réjizz will also take the stage at “The Era Experience,” performing with a live full band, unreleased music, and an exhibition set for September 27 in Bangkok.

Réjizz believes that blending hip hop, Thai music, and the English language can echo beyond his country, particularly those internationally who resonate with his journey. He reminisces: “I always wanted to be a great artist that would make music that lives on for generations. I still believe in this vision.”
